About Te Whakamana Oranga
He ingoa i whakaaetia e Audrey Banks, he kuia nō Ngāi Te Rangi.
In deciding on a name for her practice, Ruth wanted something that expressed more than just the functional aspects of the mahi. Having valued the breadth and depth of insight and wisdom in many discussions with mana whenua in recent years, she consulted for advice.
The meaning - elevating / advancing / promoting well-being and good health - expresses the essence of the approach and mahi of Mental Health Physiotherapy.
This concept focuses on the frond or koru and the ‘inner workings’ of an individual, their brain, their ‘support network’ of people. The graphical element loosely ties to the shape of an ear or brain, while also remaining as a simple frond unfurling. Reference to the ear symbolises listening and hearing what's important to each person, with the brain representing the neurobiological aspects underlying this approach to mental health and physiotherapy.
The koru is symbolic of new life, growth, empowerment, movement and mana.
The outer koru is a protector, similar to going onto a marae where the men flank and protect the women and children. The outer koru provides support and gives life to a growing being.
Colours were chosen because they cover aspects of nature (including the fern), and the greens and blues which are inherently calming. They are also strong, professional, approachable and interesting.
The shapes and colours behind the koru represent the support of whānau and others; they appear like pāua, a shell which is frequently used to represent the eyes in Māori carvings and traditionally associated with the whetū.
